Environmental Cleanup – Lekki Axis, Lagos

Sustainability is not only a conversation, it is action.

In the Lekki axis of Lagos, where rapid urban development meets vulnerable drainage infrastructure, improper waste disposal has increasingly contributed to clogged water channels and recurring flooding. In flood-prone communities, blocked drainages do more than inconvenience residents, they damage homes, disrupt livelihoods, increase health risks, and strain local infrastructure.

Recognizing that no single organization can address such challenges alone, Cascade Sustainability Foundation partnered with Africa Cleanup Initiative to carry out a coordinated environmental cleanup exercise in the area.

This collaboration was rooted in a shared belief: sustainable communities are built through collective responsibility.

Volunteers from both organizations worked side by side to clear debris, remove plastic waste, and open up clogged drainage systems to restore water flow. What may appear as a routine cleanup effort represented something deeper, a coordinated response to a systemic issue that requires both civic engagement and sustained awareness.

Environmental challenges are interconnected, urbanization, waste management gaps, public awareness, and infrastructure limitations all play a role. Addressing them requires aligned organizations working toward a collective goal.

This cleanup in Lekki was not just about removing waste. It was about modeling cooperation, encouraging civic ownership, and demonstrating that when like-minded organizations align their efforts, practical change becomes possible.

Hands-on sustainability. Shared responsibility. Collective impact.
